L'Abbaye a été fondée en (1125) par Amédée de Lausanne, avec l'aide du Comte Amédée III de Savoie et l'appui de Bernard de Clairvaux, et construite durant le (XIIème siècle) par des Moines Cisterciens. At the beginning of the 12th century, Benedictine monks settled to the north-east of Lake le Bourget, on the mountain of Cessens. Hautecombe Abbey was founded about 1101, in a narrow valley near Lake Bourget by hermits from Aulps Abbey.

Both Pope Celestine IV and Pope Nicolas III are said to have been monks here, but this was never proven.
